MANAGE THE DYNAMICS OF DIFFERENCE
Conversations around race and other manifestations of oppression can be very difficult to navigate. It elicits strong emotional responses from both privileged groups and marginalized groups. COURAGEOUS CONVERSATIONS is a tool utilized to navigate discussions by attempting to break down tensions through a conversation that allows those who possess knowledge on particular topics to have the opportunity to share it, and those who do not have the knowledge, to learn and grow from the experience. DMPS recommends this framework for those who want to explore those topics in a safe, effective, and productive manner.
THE FOUR AGREEMENTS
CONFIDENTIALITY: respect the privacy of the individuals involved in the conversation. Share ideas, but not identities.
NOTICE PATTERNS OF PARTICIPATION: Be aware of when it is time to speak, and time to allow others to speak on their own behalf. Give everyone the opportunity to voice their ideas, and commit to conversing through the differences that arise in order to expand awareness of others experiences and backgrounds.
24-48 HOUR RULE: Be honest about feelings that arise with yourself and others, and respectfully address issues that linger with that person within the first 24-48 hours. Otherwise, it is understood that one must make peace with the situation and let it go.
NO HEARSAY RULE: Do not gossip or spread rumors. Go directly to the source for information or clarification on any issues that are upsetting.
